Creative Component Open Category Sign-Ups 

Schools that did not qualify for the Semi-Finals through the Preliminary Round (Top 50 Schools) can also join the Creative Component Open Category. The top 2 teams from the Open Category can re-join the competition as Semi-Finalists and participate in the Geo-Trail. This brings the total number of Semi-Finalists to 52 schools.

Interested teams must send an email to nusgeographychallenge@gmail.com to indicate their interest to join the Open Category by 3 March 2017.

GC2017 Preliminary Round Results

A big thank you to all schools that participated in today’s Preliminary Round! The GC2017 Organising Committee truly appreciates your support and we hope that all our student participants are enjoying their GC experience thus far.

The Preliminary Round scripts have been marked by our team and the long-awaited results are out! We will announce the Semi-Finalists (Top 50 teams), the top performing individuals (MCQSQ) and the top performing schools for the Application Question.

GC2017 Semi-Finals

Next up in your GC2017 journey is the Semi-Finals, consisting of two components: the Creative Component (40%) and the Geo-Trail (60%).

All schools have already been briefed about the Creative Component earlier today. A hard copy of the Creative Component circular has also been given to each school during registration. A soft copy of the circular will be sent out and made available on this blog in due course.

Schools that did not qualify for the Semi-Finals through the Preliminary Round (Top 50 Schools) can also join the Creative Component Open Category. The Geo-Trail will take place on 25 March 2017 (Saturday). More details on the Geo-Trail will be made available closer to the date of the event.

Other Matters

Please take note that no replacements or changes to the team members are permitted at this point in the competition.

1 Day to Geography Challenge 2017!

GC2017 is happening tomorrow and we are excited to meet everyone during the Preliminary Round!

Here are a few reminders as you prepare for an exciting day tomorrow:

  • Time: Registration starts at 7.15am (till 8.00am)
  • Venue: LT11, Faculty of Arts and Social Science, NUS
  • Attire: Full School Uniform
  • Things to bring:
    • Identity / Student Card (for Registration)
    • Stationery (e.g. pen, pencils, colouring materials)
    • Jacket / Sweater
  • Please remember to have breakfast before coming for the Preliminary Round Assessment.
  • Refreshments (lunch) will be provided for all students and teachers

Two days left to NUS GC 2017 Preliminary Round!

Hello all!
We are less than two days away from the start of NUS GC 2017. We have sent out an email to all teachers-in-charge of the participating schools with the Preliminary Round Circular attached.
1. Overview
The Preliminary Round will comprise 2 components:
(i) Individual Round: MCQs and Structured Questions
There will be a total of 40 MCQs and 4 Structured Questions which students have to answer. These questions are based on Geography topics, adhering to the syllabus for iGeo (International Geography Olympiad). Sample questions for NUS GC2016 have already been uploaded on the NUS GC WordPress.
(ii) Team Round: Application Question (AQ)
Problem-based, open-ended Application Question has to be tackled by each school team. The AQ will be centred on the synthesis of physical and human geographical concepts.
2. Results
The breakdown of scores for Preliminary Round is as follows:
i. Individual Round (30% of total Preliminary score)
ii. Team Round (70% of total Preliminary score)
Based on the total scores calculated from both rounds, the Top 50 teams will qualify for the Semi-Finals (i.e. Creative Component and Geo-Trail). Names of schools who will proceed to the Top 50 as semi-finalists will be announced by 25th Feb 2017, 2359 hrs. Results will be disseminated via email, the ‘NUS Geography Challenge’ Facebook Page and Blog.
3. Admin Changes
Schools which did not qualify into the Top 50 will be given the chance to advance into the Semi-Finals through the Open Category of the Creative Component. The Top 2 teams from this categories will be chosen to join the other 50 teams, making it a total of 52 teams competing in the Semi-Finals.
4. Reporting Details
Time: Registration starts at 7.15 am (to 8.00 am)
Expected End Time: 2.00 pm
Venue: LT11, Faculty of Arts and Social Science, NUS
Attire: Full School Uniform
Things to bring:
– Identity / Student Card (for Registration)
– Jacket / Sweater
– Stationery (i.e. pencil, pen, coloured pens, coloured markers, ruler, stapler)
Please have breakfast before coming. Lunch/Refreshments will be provided for all students and teachers.

If taking bus service 95, please alight at Bus Stop 4: Kent Ridge Terminal. Bus service: 95 (From Buona Vista MRT)

  • Please alight at Bus Stop 4: Kent Ridge Terminal, take the sheltered walkway to Ventus and cross the overhead bridge to LT11.

Bus service: 151 (From Hougang MRT)

  • Please alight at Bus Stop 4: Kent Ridge Terminal, take the sheltered walkway to Ventus and cross the overhead bridge to LT11.

As we gear up for NUS GC 2017, you can also check out other student activities that are happening as part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Urban Planning Festival from 14-31 March 2017, at the URA Centre!

“The Urban Planning Festival 2017 is a specially curated programme of school-centric activities for secondary school and pre-university students. The festival includes activities like exhibitions, talks, workshops and tours to enrich students with in depth planning knowledge pertinent to their specific course of study. Extension of Registration Deadline for NUS GC 2017

Hi Everyone!

Schools registration deadline for NUS GC 2017 will be extended till Monday, 6th February 2017 2359hrs.

This is to take into account the Lunar New Year public holiday and to give schools more time to assemble participants.

The cost of registration is SGD$60 per team (of 3 students each) and all participants must be between 13 to 16 years old as of 1 January 2017.
